MISS WORLD CANADA wins Fitness and Sport Training Competition at Miss World Contest

Nazanin Afshin-Jam of Vancouver now guaranteed a spot among the Top Twenty Finalists

SANYA, CHINA - SP Productions is delighted to announce that Nazanin Afshin-Jam, Miss World Canada 2003, today won the Fitness and Sport Training Pre-Event at this year's Miss World Contest. This victory guarantees Ms. Afshin-Jam a place among the pageant's Top Twenty finalists.

The Fitness and Sport Training Pre-Event, better known as the "Beach Olympics", was comprised of various aerobic and fitness activities, designed to seek out the fittest delegate from among the 106 representatives from across the world who participated in swimming, running and other athletic disciplines.

"We are absolutely thrilled for Nazanin," said Connie McNaughton, President of SP Productions, the company that produces the Miss World Canada Contest. "This is a great day for Canada, for Nazanin, and for all of us on the Miss World Canada team, as this is our first year running the contest. What a better way could there be to end the year, aside from seeing Nazanin crowned Miss World 2003?"

The winners of four other special pre-events will also earn a berth in the Top Twenty. The winner of the Miss World Scholarship is yet to be determined, and the representatives from Ireland, Georgia and Bolivia won the modeling, talent and Miss Friendship pre-events earlier this week.

This is the first time since 1989 that Canada has been present in among the Top Twenty finalists of the Miss World competition. Canada has never won the Miss World title, but oddsmakers from the United Kingdom, Australia and the Caribbean all have the Canadian beauty among the top favourites for the title.

The Miss World 2003 finals will be held in Sanya, China on December 6. An estimated 2 billion people will watch the event finals on television, making Miss World the most-watched annual event on the planet.

Nazanin was crowned Miss World Canada 2003 on October 22 in Toronto, in a gala event sponsored by the Holiday Inn on King, Christina Swimwear and Bobby and Sally Ackbarali Fashion Designs.
